Indiana LLC Registered Agent: Keeping Your Home Address Private

Every Indiana LLC must name a registered agent with a physical Indiana street address, and that address becomes public record, so a trainer who acts as their own agent publishes their home address to anyone who searches the Secretary of State’s database. The remedy is structural: appoint a commercial registered agent, give the business a principal office address that is not your kitchen, and carry both decisions into every other public listing. What the rule says

Indiana’s Uniform Business Organizations Code requires every registered entity to continuously maintain a registered agent in the state, at IC 23-0.5-4, and the agent must have a street address where legal documents can be delivered during business hours; a post office box does not satisfy it. Where your home address leaks

The registered agent field is the obvious leak, but it is rarely the only one. The principal office address on the articles and on each business entity report is public. A Department of Revenue registration for a retail merchant certificate carries an address. A Google Business Profile asks for one, and a trainer listing a home address there invites strangers to it. Client agreements, invoices and the footer of a website all repeat whatever address you chose on day one. Fixing the registered agent while leaving the principal office as your home protects half the record.

Three ways trainers keep the home private

1. Appoint a commercial registered agent. Companies exist to serve as the agent for a modest annual fee, with a staffed Indiana street address; compare providers and change the agent through INBiz. This is the single highest-value move.
2. Use a non-home principal office address where the state accepts one. Which address types satisfy the principal office requirement is a Secretary of State question; ask before you file rather than assuming a mailbox service qualifies.
3. Ask, never assume, about using a facility’s address. The rented room at 885 Monon Green Blvd is where you work, not automatically an address you may print on filings, business profiles or client paperwork; ask the facility’s pro support team what it permits before listing it anywhere.

What the agent is actually for

A registered agent receives service of process, the lawsuit paperwork, and official state notices, which is why the law wants a real person or company at a real address during business hours. An agent who cannot be reached means a lawsuit you learn about late or a state notice you never see, and a lapsed agent is one of the routes to administrative dissolution. Choosing a commercial agent therefore solves two problems at once: your home leaves the public record, and a professional service reads the mail.
